Plankton Portal Talk
I thought the branching tentacle across the left edge of the frame looked cydippid like, but the body is here: APK00081bj and it's weird...
Neat #medusa
Edge of a #corncob #sipho, see APK0007i9d. I got 'sipho' right for this little bit at least! 😃
Gorgeous #cydippid!
Awesome branching/twisted #radiolariancolony!
Here's another of those weird jelly/protist weird ones!
Glad I'm not the only one confused! I thought it resembled a cydippid a little, but there are too many tentacles.
A lovely #ephyrae
Pretty #morethan4tentacles #medusa
Fishy! #fishlarva
Tiny copepod in the bottom right corner, up and left of of the unidentifiable thing at the edge.
Wow! Thanks for sharing the literal bigger picture! Why are there so many doliolids here compared to the California data?
Another #medusa, not quite as pretty a picture.
Lovely #medusa! I don't think we saw this type in Cali..
#sipho tagged it as a two cups, but certainly a funky looking one.
#doliolid city, with friends. Not sure what the one on the top right is...
...and the next image I get is a bigger one! #rocket-ship #triangle
First pretty #rocket-ship in the Mediterranean for me. 😃
Tentacles from some BIG thing. These tentacles sprawl across 6 images, possible ID here: APK000975a
Neat! So few doliolids in the California data set, hardly saw any with tails, never mind budding like this!
#doliolid, do they bud somewhat like the siphos? Are all those smaller doliolids breaking off from the larger one?
A small #cydippid with lovely branching tentacles.
Lovely #Doliolid with tail.
I want to say it might actually be a squid, the internal structure looks different from a rocket ship.
I can't ID it :\ Maybe some small crustacean or isopod?
And they almost always seem to face the camera for a nice profile! Probably something to do with the way the water is flowing through?
Yup, that's a #larvacean #house down on the bottom left.
Distance actually doesn't matter! ISIIS is super cool: http://blog.planktonportal.org/2013/09/24/why-the-images-look-the-way-they-do/
#solmaris party!
#cydippid with its tentacles pulled in?
Goodnight! Love that rocket ship, it's so perfect!
Neat #protist front and center. Spiky fellow!
Hiding from the camera, boo! That #solmaris knows where the limelight is, front and center!
Crowded neighbourhood! Double #larvacean #house, I wonder if they're stuck together?
#lobate coming in for a kiss!
nice #rocket-ship #thimble with a #budding tail
#radiolarian #colony in the bottom right, odd shape and stretched rather thin! #alphabet for @yshish, upsidedown G or v?
You were around when I left last night, and you're here this morning too! Do you ever sleep, yshish? 😄
A long #radiolarian #colony, not made up of the'hollow' ones seen in most long chains. Very pretty!
Beautifully detailed #sipho #corncob in a messy background. Focus is perfect!
Good morning #larvacean #house!
Lovely #lobate come to say goodnight 😃
I go away for a few days and suddenly we can zoom on talk! I remember seeing one of these before, but can't remember what it is. Baby sipho?
:_) :D ;) ;_D Take out the _'s and DON'T ASK WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THIS COMMENT WITH FORMATTING.. 😦 😃 😄 😉 ;D
There's a copepod at 4 o'clock, do you mean the little circle? To small for me to guess. 😦
Perhaps it is a very large version of a 'fuzzy' protist? Like this one? APK0004aeh
#budding tail of some kind in the bottom right. Come back and let us see you! 😦
Gorgeous #larvacean #house with occupant! I think this is the biggest/most intact I've seen of this particular type.
A very wiggly #larvacean, looks almost twisted?
Glad I'm not the only one confused by this thing! Come up with any ideas in the last year @yshish? 😃
Yes, a lovely #lobate!
and we have 'half filled the cup' with our well intentioned classifications. Metaphors are almost as complex as plankton!
@yshish, it was a mixed metaphor, 'see the cup as half full' is a metaphor, seeing 'half full' is optimistic, 'half empty' is pessimistic,
You got it @Ksloots, and you're right, it's the 'best effort' that counts, and learning as you go along to be as informed as possible! 😃
I think it's a #morethan4tentacles #medusa? Hiding its tentacles, but it's a nice bell shape.
Hey, it's #sharkpoo! Not shedding quite as much particulate matter... #4tentacles #medusa just off the side, too.
#rocket-ship #thimble #feeding What a tail! Faint, but incredibly long.
I don't want to even think about how many little critters that tiny I've missed. Most times they're too small and blurry.
#beroida nose! Nose? Tail? It occurs to me I don't know what end is which on these guys. Field guide is of no help.
Neat short branching tail on a #rocket-ship #thimble
Lovely #lobate
What IS this? I recall seeing something similar on Talk, but I can't remember what the conclusion was..
...Well, I never would have guessed it was a medusa! Those little bits count as tentacles?
A headscratcher... marked it as a #rocket-ship #triangle, I think it may be decaying?
And incredibly rarely. I still haven't seen one outside of Talk. 😦
Hey, i and u are easy, if you have any convincing a's I can spell my name! 😃
The shape is so bizarre, I called it a twocups after scratching my head for a bit, might be from the side and a bit more opaque than usual?
Shoot, I called it a cydippid, the tentacles got me again! Body structure does give it away, thin and wiggly instead of thick radials.
#morethan4tentacles #medusa. I love these ones, they're so delicate looking.
Thanks for the extra info! I have noticed the different head types on the larvaceans and different styles of houses, these ones seem rarer.
Lovely #4tentacles #medusa, looks like she's recently caught a snack #feeding
@yshish help! 😃 I think this is a doliolid without tail, but it's oddly pinched in the middle.
Sharkpoo?! Is that a joke or is this actually some feces from a larger animal?
@yshish help! 😃 What a weird one! I don't think it's a medusa, but I also have no idea what it is, all sharp angles on the body.
You can move the axis marking after you've marked the species. Very handy for huge things like this. And yes, a very faint house, good eyes!
Yes, it must be coming around for a visit. 😃
Yes! While they normally appear laid out straight, they can swim with a whole body motion.
What a beauty! Always awesome to see something new and unfamiliar.
A strange #larvacean #house with the 1+2 tentacles, with a great view of the structure of the house and occupant.
Got it right again 😃 Almost looks like it's hit the camera, the way it's spewing particles everywhere.
Yes, with the #larvacean occupant chilling out!
I think that might be a really cool protist! Lobates are more solid.
Yes! Cute little copepod, too.
A goodnight #sipho #corncob 😃 In addition to fitting politely in frame, this one even understands photography rule of thirds, very artsy!
Aaah, alright, I haven't seen any so perfectly edge-on and all compressed, it looked just different enough for me to wonder what it was!
I have to agree! You've caught a lovely #doliolid, with tail.
For me, it's when I can't see any of the original structure and it's just a clump. I can't see anything that looks like a house here.
Someone get the wine! The plankton have brought the goblets 😃
A #larvacean #house, this one's older and possibly abandoned, no occupant in sight.
It's a #larvacean (the curled ribbon part) within a very fresh #house (the solid white blob, and the very faint structure around)
Marked as a #morethan4tentacles, but ???, the body looks too thin to me to be a solmaris.
Looks like a shrimp curled up, the tail fin pointing downwards, head to the right.
Yes! #radiolarian They can get ridiculously long.
The remnants of a #larvacean #house
It's a #protist, not marked for this project.
Oh, neat. I don't think I've seen a hungry one before, must be very good predators!
It's a #larvacean, quite a large one, curled up on itself.
Yup, a nice #larvacean house.
#rocket-ship #thimble #feeding Interesting head on this one, looks more 'lumpy' on the inside than most thimbles I've seen.
What is that in the middle? No internal structure at all, just a long transparent ribbon.
Is that a salp or a doliolid?
Round #radiolarian colony or a supersized protist?
A small cydippid with tentacles retracted?
What it lacks in body size it makes up for with tail! Wow!
Not a shrimp, but some sort of crustacean? Should we mark these or leave them alone?
#sipho #corncob sticking it's nose out at the camera.
Images like this make me think that half the marine snow bits are actually #copepod and #larvacean, out of focus. Try and count them all!
A tiny little #cydippid
Neat #doliolid with some more developed internal structure. Bonus little #rocket-ship on the left.
A neat #shrimp, looks a bit more translucent than most, and very feathery in the leg area.
Cute little #lobate making a face.
So kind 😃 They are so lovely!
Pretty big #arrowworm with all the fins very clearly visible.
An unusual looking #4tentacles #medusa
Hello #cestida! Aren't you looking mighty massive today? Thanks for folding yourself up so we can see all of you! 😄
Gorgeous detail on this #rocket-ship #thimble
Did someone say #solmaris party? 😄
Small sipho? Having difficulty IDing this one.
Damaged is putting it rather lightly! Poor thing.
Today is #rocket-ship day apparently! I've seen so many pretty ones today. Look at that tail! #thimble #budding #feeding
These little guys are so rare, I love when I see one 😃
Relatively short #corncob, but still huge!
Quite the the impressive tail! #rocket-ship #thimble
What do we have here? Doesn't really look like a rocketship thimble body, much too round for a doliolid...
A nice #rocket-ship #thimble that's #feeding and #budding. Too bad it's not front and center!
Is this a VERY large shrimp in escape posture or something else? Image below has the other half: APK0006pco
Thalassos can have tentacles!? This guy confused me terribly trying to figure out how to classify it.
It's a #solmaris party!
Lovely #medusa #morethan4tentacles
Something tasty! Is whatever it is wrapped up in one of the long tentacles to bring it to the mouth? I'm not clear on how they catch prey.
Wow! #rocket-ship #thimble #feeding Great catch!
Tailless doliolid? It has an odd extra shell around it that I can't recall seeing before.
Wow indeed! The clearest lobate I've seen so far. Not counting ones in your collections, @yshish. 😉
So many larvaceans! I think this is the busiest image I've seen, got into the double digits counting up all the little ones.
Pretty #solmaris, looks like it's wearing a cute top hat. 😃
Neat #rocket-ship #thimble with a complex tail, with some #budding on the top portion.
Great shot of a #medusa! Where did it's fourth tentacle go, though?
Nice duo! #rocket-ship #thimble with a long tail, and a #morethan4tentacles #medusa
A nice #rocket-ship #thimble with a branching tail. Out of focus 😦
Something big in the top left corner! What little we can see makes me think a BIG rocket ship triangle, but it's not really clear.
Adding my 'hmmm...' to the two cups, two thimbles debate. The bit where both of them have their own little tails makes me think thimbles..
Another pretty one, with.. whatever that body part is, fully extended. 😃 #solmaris
A #beroida! First clear one I've seen 😃
Marked as #morethan4tentacles #medusa, but I wish we could see all of it!
Not sure if this #medusa really only has two tentacles or if the others are somehow hiding.
@yshish I got it, and you should have my reply in the morning. Good night! And what a lovely rocket ship! 😄
Using Chrome here. Hmm... those markers are a lot smaller on firefox. That's odd.
#arrowworm feeding? Can't tell if it's just overlapping that little crustacean or if it's having a snack.
Yes! Houses for everyone!
Thanks! Very odd to see intact pieces floating free.
Here a #copepod, there a copepod, everywhere a copepod! (I count seven, though I only marked the largest four, the others are tiny!)
A very pretty #4tentacles #medusa
Okay, what is THAT? #radiolarian off the right side, but what's the odd mostly transparent fellow?
Okay, thanks! I haven't seen many large clumps of protists.
A rather large #medusa
Gorgeous! #rocket-ship #thimble #budding
Does this count as a radiolarian colony, or not because it's missing a distinct outer shell?
a #larvacean with the starting of a #house, just starting to make this one?
I think the one in the middle is a small corncob sipho? Not sure about the ID of the blurry one on the left.
Gorgeous #feeding #rocket-ship #thimble The tails are a bit fuzzy, but I think there's a tight spiral in addition to the one going wide.
A little mystery 😃 It sure has a pretty branching tail!
Is that a corncob bottom right? Rather blurry, can't see much structure.
Something big off the right top side, hard to guess what it may be.
Thanks for the diagram! I'll keep in mind marking outside the image if I spy any other identifiable tails.
A very pretty #solmaris
Tail of a sipho? Very impressive, whoever it belongs to!
This #medusa has four tentacles, but doesn't look like the same species as the usual 4t medusa.
Neat #radiolarian #colony with lots of varying sizes in the colony.
A neat #larvacean #house with a single tentacle tail.
What do we have here? Looks somewhat like a sipho, but not quite...
Woo, I got it right! Stared at this guy for a while going 'what IS that?'
I see we're already tagged up here, but I think it's missing #FFF! Got an out loud 'WOW!' from me when it came up. 😃 also #feeding
Quite the image to start the day! A #larvacean #house and a pair of #rocket-ship #triangle and #thimble
Thanks for all the conversation and help yshish! Always nice to catch you online, soon I'll be answering other people's questions!
#rocket-ship #triangle with a lovely tail and a little tiny bit of #budding visible. Nice image to sign off for the night on. 😃
A very fine #radiolarian chain, seeing the individuals requires a bit of squinting. Much much smaller than their #protist buddy. 😃
My first Cestida! These guys certainly are rare!
Cute little #goblet #medusa on the right
Cool! I wasn't sure, it's so hard to see the details sometimes.
Very funny! Like the Solmaris with their single tentacle flipped over the opposite site.
The more than four catch all. 😃 I can see why they're your favorite, very pretty structure, very distinct.
These guys are such a treat to see! So lovely, and so rare.
An unusually large and clear #copepod So many details to see that don't normally show up!
#rocket-ship #thimble Might be starting to bud on the tail? Fuzzy focus 😦
Big #sipho #corncob, I think it's folded over. Not much of a tail to it.
Haven't seen any that big before! Does that make it a particularly long lasting house built up over time, or home to a big larvacean?
Very similar posture to the last two noted here, two tentacles out front: http://blog.planktonportal.org/2013/10/25/fff-special-behavior/
#rocket-ship #triangle with quite the tail!
Woah! #Medusa caught up on.. is that a radiolarian colony or just a large chunk of debris? If it's a colony, looks like it's breaking up?
I think we hit someone's house! Wrecked #larvacean #house and the tail end of a fleeing larvacean at the top.
Is that a huge larvacean house on the right side? Looks like the remnants of two small ones above it. No occupants in sight...
Whose tentacles are we looking at here? That's some interesting detail on the one in the middle.
Gorgeous #solmaris! Always neat to get a straight on view instead of from the side.
pretty #rocket-ship #triangle with nothing else around.
#arrowworm actively swimming here, for a change!
Very clear shot! Medusa of some kind?
Thanks! I haven't gone through all the blog posts yet, I think it's time I do!
I've been meaning to ask, what's the FFF tag for? Also what indicates this guy is feeding? Something to do with the short middle tentacle?
Looks like a sipho trainwreck, poor thing!
Is it my imagination or does this 'house' have tentacles, one to the top left and two to the bottom right?
Is that a little salp or doliolid middle left?
Two large #larvacean hanging around a #house. Roommates? 😄
#shrimp in an interesting posture, half way to curled up.
Thanks! I wasn't sure how big goblet medusae got. Definitely the biggest rocketship I've seen.
#radiolarian #colony So polite, it's bent at one end to stay within the frame!
#rocket-ship #thimble Another beauty! I'm convinced these guys were hiding from me until I started noticing all the small rockets...
#rocket-ship #triangle Can't miss this one. 😃
-be completely wrong! Never seen one that wasn't a small fuzzy outline.
Wow! I tagged this as a goblet medusa, as the body shape seemed the closest, and there are two strong tentacles, but I'm fully prepared to-
Cestida or a larvacean? So curled up on itself I can't tell if it has a head or not!
A lovely big #arrowworm, a far cry from the little ones I normally see!
I will figure them out eventually! Thanks for all your help 😃
Cydippid? Not sure who all those tentacles belong to!
Pretty #sipho! A short one, but nice and clear.
So many little things! Is the little oval middle-right a tail-less Doliolid?
Wow! Biggest house I've seen so far! That's another larvacean off to the right bottom side, right?
I wonder who all these tentacles belong to? Maybe a medusa?
Their tails are so hard to see when there's any marine snow around! Thanks for the link yshish.
Newerish 😃 Maybe filtering more fine particles, thus all the structure is outlined without it turning into a blobby mess? Lots going on!
Lobate in the middle? Would be the first one I've seen if it is!
Not sure what to classify the little oval guy in the middle as?
Is this a particularly new/fresh house? The structure is so very clear, frequently they look like messy blobs.
Thanks for all your comments, yshish!
Radiolarian colony? Like a string of pearls...
Hard to say what this is, other than large and close to the camera! Any ideas?
Is there a classification for protists or do they go unmarked? Very pretty!
What is that in the center? Plankton butterfly? 😃 Maybe a larvacean house?
