#doliolid, do they bud somewhat like the siphos? Are all those smaller doliolids breaking off from the larger one?

Yes, on their tails. This one seems to be releasing them into the ocean 😃 #FFF

Neat! So few doliolids in the California data set, hardly saw any with tails, never mind budding like this!

They are indeed budding (reproducing asexually). It looks like siphos but the process is a bit different.

Siphos live as long chains of specialised units (some of which reproduce). Doliolids are solitary but bud to reproduce.

This is WAY cool ! 😃

Was tempted to mark those that seemed to have separated from the tail as individual doliolids. What do you think?

    Posted

  • yshish by yshish moderator, translator

Well, the 'tail' connecting the buds together may not be always visible (like here) so we cannot be sure whether they have been set free or

whether it is not visible in the image. I would mark all those which I see as unconnected.

(Btw, I think Jessica told me to mark buds at Siphonophores - but Doliolids have a special category for budding so I don't mark their ones)

    Clarify that last comment please?

You don't see the connecting parts here because the organism is somewhat out of focus. But i would definitely mark this as one organism only

@yshish: Is the doliolid special category for budding the "with tails" category? So there is no need to hash tag budding when you see it?

    Posted

  • yshish by yshish moderator, translator

Yes, exactly. "Doliolid with tail' = 'Budding doliolid' vs. 'Doliolid' = 'Single body' 😃 And @jo.irisson asked us not to mark buds of Sipho

but we can tag them in comments using hashtags: budding and/or reproduction .It has no point at Doliolids since they're already marked so 😃

    Thanks, that helps a lot!
