It looks just like an ophiuoroid (brittle-star), but they wouldn't be in the plankton, right?

yes, this protist does look like a star! sea stars, and echinoderms in general, are on the sea floor (benthic)

some brittle stars have free-swimming larva though ("ophiopluteus"), though they look very different from the adults
