Not sure what I'm looking at...

I just started classifying plankton (fun!), but pictures with all this white matter throw me. Am I looking at plankton? Organic matter? Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the Plankton Portal! So happy to see new 'faces' here!! 😃
All that noise could be marine snow (dead organic matter), tiny plankton, or effects made by density differences in the water. All of it can create shadows which is what we see in the pictures since ISIIS works on the principles of shadowgraphy. Does it answer your question?
In general, the Californian data set includes images of a better quality than Mediterranean, but you can find great pictures in both! 😃

Thank you! I'm just loving this. I'm turning into a plankton geek! It's like Where's Waldo ocean style!
